Paul Nielsen's
British Flora Gallery
Welcome to my pages devoted to British flora. I am a keen (but amateur) naturalist who is constantly amazed at the variety, abundance and sheer beauty of the wildlife to be found in the British Isles. These pages aim to show just some of this cornucopia and I hope that the content proves to be of interest and encourages others to take an interest in our countryside (residents and tourists!).
I had intended to cover a broad spectrum of wildlife (fungi, mammals, birds etc.) but I got rather carried away with the orchids! Apologies to non-orchid enthusiasts - one day I will complete my task.
What's new!

I make no apology that my primary interest is wild orchids and, hence, this category is well represented (in fact its the only one so far!)

All the wildlife related images on these pages are mine (except where credited) and have been derived from 35mm transparencies. Images on these pages may not be used for any commercial purpose without my express permission.
Most of the photographs were taken with a Minolta X-700 (old, but offering the control and flexibility I need for difficult shots) with the standard focusing screen replaced with a plain matt one. For most shots I use a 90mm macro lens allowing magnifications to 1:1 and this is supplemented with a 28 - 200mm telephoto lens for plant groups and habitats. I have recently upgraded to a Canon EOS30 complete with Canon 100mm macro lens and 28-105mm lens and ring flash. This is complemented by a Benbo tripod that allows complete flexibility in positioning.
I scan the resulting transparencies using the Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart Photo Scanner (a very wonderful bit of kit that allows scanning of conventional photos as well as negatives!) and touch up the images using Paint Shop Pro.
